The manuscript has left my desk. This week, the first copies of The Copper Water went out to a small group of advance readers.
There's a particular kind of quiet that follows sending a book out like this. For months it belongs only to me — every sentence weighed a dozen times, every clue placed and checked and placed again. Then it goes out, and for a while it belongs to no one. It sits in someone else's inbox, unread, and I have no say in what happens next.
The Copper Water is the first Mathew Kuruvila investigation, set along the backwaters I've written about before — the same stretch of water that shaped The Red Light Secret's sense of place, though this time the story and the setting are inseparable in a way I haven't attempted before. It's the book I've spent the most time getting right, and the one I was most reluctant to let go of.
Advance readers matter more than most people realise. They're the first honest test of whether a book works — not whether the sentences are tidy, but whether the story holds up when someone has no reason to be kind about it. Early feedback shapes the last pass before the manuscript goes to KDP, and early reviews, when the book launches, are often what convince a stranger to take a chance on an unfamiliar name.
