About Joseph

A writer of coastlines and crossings

Joseph Sebastian, author
Biography

Vadackal, and everywhere the road led after

Joseph Sebastian was born and raised in Vadackal, in the Alappuzha district of Kerala — a landscape of backwaters, canals, and small Catholic communities that still shapes the geography of his fiction. From there, his life became one of movement: further study and work in India, time spent in Thailand, years living in Britain, and travels that have carried him well beyond any single home.

He holds a BA in Social Work and Psychology and an MBA in Marketing, and his career has spanned international management, sales, and community-facing roles across several countries — experience that shows up in his fiction's instinct for character and structure alike.

He is a British citizen of Indian origin, and describes himself, half-seriously, as someone who has never quite finished leaving Kerala.

Roots

Born and raised in Vadackal, Alappuzha district, Kerala, in a Kerala Catholic community whose rhythms and geography run through his fiction.

Study

Completed a BA in Social Work and Psychology, later an MBA in Marketing — a combination that shows up in both his character psychology and his instinct for structure.

Abroad

Lived and worked across Thailand and Britain, in international management, sales, and community-facing roles, with travels that have carried him across many more countries besides.

Now

A British citizen of Indian origin, still moving between places. Writes fiction full-time, drawing on a life spent between Kerala, Thailand, Britain, and beyond.

What he writes, and why

Joseph's fiction returns to the same territory from different directions — a Kerala backwater village, a family keeping something back, a coastline that remembers more than the people living on it. His crime fiction favours fair-play plotting over shock; his literary work favours restraint over statement.

He is currently completing The Copper Water, the first in the Mathew Kuruvila investigation series, and preparing it for submission to Indian publishers.
