Joseph Sebastian is a British citizen of Indian origin, born and raised in Vadackal, in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. Growing up near the sea, among the backwaters and canals of Kerala left a lasting influence on his imagination, and the landscapes, communities, and rhythms of the region continue to find their way into his fiction.
His life and career have taken him well beyond Kerala. He has studied and worked in India, lived in Thailand and Britain, and travelled extensively across India, Asia, Europe and parts of Africa. Those years of movement have given him an enduring interest in people, places and the ways individuals carry their past with them wherever they go.
Joseph holds a BA in English Literature, a BA in Social Work and Psychology, and an MBA in Marketing. His professional career has spanned international management, sales, marketing, operations, and community-focused roles across several countries. He has also had experience in social services, correctional and rehabilitation environments, and community support settings. Together, these experiences have given him a broad perspective on human behaviour, social systems, relationships, responsibility and change.
That background informs his fiction, which often explores trust, morality, justice, resilience and transformation through character-driven stories. His books move between mystery, human drama and stories of personal discovery, with a particular interest in the complexities of people and the places that shape them.
Joseph is currently based in Australia. His writing draws on both the places he has lived and the many places he has encountered along the way, often bringing together different cultures, landscapes and perspectives.
He remains closely connected to Kerala and describes himself, half-seriously, as someone who has never quite finished leaving home.
