There's a particular quiet that comes before a book has a name.
I've started something new. I'm not ready to say much about it yet — not the title, not the shape of it, not even who it's really about, though a voice has started to arrive on the page most days, insistent in the way they eventually are. Early on, a story is still mostly weather. You can feel which way it's moving before you can describe it.
People sometimes ask what a new book is "about" before I've earned the right to answer that honestly. The truthful answer, for now, is: I don't fully know yet, and I'm trying not to decide too quickly. The worst thing I can do at this stage is explain a book to myself before I've actually written my way into it. Explanation kills the thing that's still alive.
What I can say is that it feels different from the last one — a different room in the same house, maybe. Familiar instincts, an unfamiliar door. That's usually a good sign. The books that turn out to matter to me are rarely the ones I could summarize confidently on day one.
So this is not an announcement. It's closer to a note left for myself, and for anyone curious enough to want one — something is underway. I'll say more when there's more worth saying. Until then, it stays mostly in the weather.
